Chairman's Notes
23rd July 2009
I hope you enjoyed the final event on Tuesday, despite the rain. My thanks to Easingwold Running Club for arranging the event and volunteers from other clubs who helped with the marshalling. Thanks also to Janet from Sweatshop for presenting the trophies and to Sarah for taking the photos which are now on the site.
It has been a pleasure helping to arrange the league this year, and I have enjoyed every event. Thanks to everyone who has run in the races and/or helped with the organisation. I am looking forward to the 2010 series!
Regards
Mark

It was yet another good event on Tuesday. Thanks to everyone at Selby for the usual first class organisation.
The final event is the presentation evening and handicap at Stillington. I am trying to get the handicap adjustments published, but I don't know if this will be possible or not. Either way they will be stuck to the wall of the clubhouse on the night. Please note that we start at 7.00 , and 7.00 = a 70 minute runner so if you normally run , say , 50 minutes you will be off at about 7.20 ; 40 minutes = 7.30 etc. Please allow a bit of time to get to the start.
The mass finish will be c 8.10, pie and peas at 8.45 , presentation at about 9.30 , finish by 10.00.
Hope to see you there.
Regards
Mark

Congratulations to York Acorn and Mike Raynes in particular for such great organisation of the inaugural 3 lap race on the Knavesmire on Tuesday. I really enjoyed it and , in view of the heat, I was glad there was, in effect ,an extra drinks station. I was pleased to note that the Red Cross reported no incidents.
I would also like to thank Sarah Hargreaves of Pocklington for all the great photos which are appearing on the site. My favourite is the mass start at Easingwold- it's even got me on it!
Cheers.Mark

The photos taken at the Tadcaster Race have made it quite easy to identify runners not wearing club colours. There were a few of these. As wearing club colours is a league rule, race referees have every right to disqualify such runners. I really don't want that to happen - so please wear club colours and we can stop talking about this. Thanks Mark.

I would just like to say sorry for the shortage of ladies toilet facilities at Tadcaster yesterday. I should have checked it out more thoroughly . Please accept my apologies. I hope this didn't detract too much from the enjoyment of the race. Regards. Mark
The original message I wrote in March is below. I just wanted to add a note today which is the day after the Pocklington race to say how fantastic it was to see so many people taking part. With 245 finishers, last night was the best turn out ever ,and the atmosphere was brilliant. Thanks to all at Pocklington for getting the season off to an immaculate start
I am very pleased to have the opportunity to put a message onto this website and first of all I would like to thank Roger Nicholls for all his hard work in creating the site.
As I write this (in March) preparations are taking place for all the Races, and we are all looking forward the 2009 league starting at Pocklington on 12 May. The races are the same as last year except that Bishop Wilton is unavailable this year as a result of the pavilion being redeveloped. In place of that race, YorK Acorn will be organising a race on the Knavesmire. I am pleased to say that Sweatshop are sponsoring the league again this year and you will recieve a £5.00 gift voucher from Sweatshop with your number this year. Please support our sponsors.
There are a couple of issues that have been discussed by the organising committee where we would appreciate the help of all runners in the league. The first relates to club colours. It is a rule of the league that club colours are worn, which is followed by the vast majority of runners. Please will you adhere to this rule? We want a quality league and we think it is reasonable to expect that if runners are representing their clubs, that they wear club colours . It shows respect to other runners too - in a competitve league you want to know who you are trying to catch, or who has just caught you. The vast majority do wear club colours of course and we do not intend to make life awkward if you happen to forget your vest on the odd occasion- just tell the finish officials. Do please note that race referees have the right to disqualify runners who don't wear club colours.
The second issue relates to the wearing of ipods/mp3 players. I appreciate that a lot of runners enjoy running and listening to music which is quite understandable. You will probably have noticed more and more races banning these devices. The reason for this is that race organisers want to make the races as safe as possible and these devices do compromise ability to hear traffic and instructions from marshalls . We have never had a major accident in one of our races and I want to do everything possible to avoid one ever happening. If you are involved in the organisation of a race you will know that risk assesments have to be completed and risk situations managed. If there ever was an accident, the organising club commitee would probably have to account for it's safety provisions. So I think that refraining from wearing a music player would also show some appreciation for the efforts of club committees as well as promoting your own safety. Please do not wear one, but if you do, it is at your own risk.
Please note that these points were agreed at a league committee meeting in March this year.
Having made those 2 points I can now lighten up a bit and say how much the organising committees appreciate the support from the runners. Everbody seems to enjoy the league- I hope we can keep it that way and we look forward to seeing everyone in May.
Regards
